Opening Hours of the Cité de Carcassonne

The Medieval City of Carcassonne is part of the town itself and is therefore open 24/7, all year round. The Château Comtal and the Ramparts, however, follow specific opening hours:

From April 1st to September 30th: 10:00 AM – 6:30 PM (Last entry: 5:45 PM)
From October 1st to March 31st: 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM (Last entry: 4:15 PM)
Closed on January 1st, May 1st, and December 25th.

About the Medieval City of Carcassonne

The Cité Médiévale of Carcassonne is a living part of the town — an open historic village with medieval streets, stone houses, shops, restaurants, and iconic landmarks, all nestled behind centuries-old fortifications. Because it is not a closed site, the city itself is freely accessible 24 hours a day, including at night, when its illuminated towers offer a truly magical experience.

This makes Carcassonne one of the rare UNESCO World Heritage Sites you can explore day or night, under the sun or stars. Whether you're an early riser or a sunset seeker, walking through its cobbled lanes and arched gateways is an unforgettable journey back in time. It’s also one of the most photogenic places in Europe — and one of the most visited attractions in southern France.

Carcassonne Castle & Ramparts Opening Hours

The Château Comtal and its surrounding ramparts form the historic heart of the fortress. Unlike the city streets, they are part of a paid monument and have fixed entry times:

  • April 1st to September 30th: 10:00 AM – 6:30 PM (Last entry: 5:45 PM)
  • October 1st to March 31st: 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM (Last entry: 4:15 PM)
  • Closed on: January 1, May 1, and December 25

We recommend arriving at least an hour before closing to enjoy the full experience — including the panoramic views from the ramparts, the castle courtyards, and the fascinating museum rooms within.
